| Terminology for
Wheels and Tires |
Plus Size - Putting a larger wheel and tire combination than
originally came with the vehicle. Plus 1 would be 1 size larger ( ex.
15" to 16"). Plus 2 would be 2 sizes larger ( ex. 15" to
17").
Offset - Offset is the distance between the mounting surface of the
wheel (which contacts the hub) and the center line of the wheel.
Positive Offset - Offset is to the outside of the wheel.
Negative Offset - Offset is the backside of the wheel.
Zero Offset - Offset is in the center of the wheel.
Backside Setting (Backspace) - The distance from the mounting surface
to the back flange of the wheel.
Hub Centric - The wheel centers on the hub instead of the
lugs. In these applications the hub center of the wheel must fit the hub
of the vehicle.
Lug Centric - The wheel centers on the lug studs. Hub diameter
is of no consequence with these applications.
Aspect Ratio - The heigth of the sidewall of the tire expressed as a
percentage. If the tire size is P205/60R15 then the aspect ratio is 60% of
the width which is 205 millimeters.
